Softball Weekly Release - Week 8

Updated Softball Statistics in HTML Format | PDF

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Penn opened up a sizable lead in the South Division last weekend, while Dartmouth and Harvard are still in a tie atop the Ivy League's North Division as the Ancient Eight softball teams began play within their own divisions.

The Quakers took three out of four from Princeton at home to move to 10-2 in League play. A wild series that could have turned out a lot different began with a 10-9 Penn win that saw the Tigers take the lead in the top of the seventh with a five-spot, only to see Penn rally with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Princeton bounced back to take the Saturday nightcap, 5-3, but the Quakers swept Sunday's twinbill, winning the opener 9-2 and holding on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap. The Tigers had the tying and go-ahead runners on when Alexis Borden got the final out and secured Penn's four-game lead in the South.

Harvard and Dartmouth swept four-game sets from Yale and Brown, respectively, to sit tied atop the North Division at 8-4. The Big Green were impressive, outscoring the Bears 29-2 in the four-game sweep. Kristen Rumley pitched all four games of the series, firing three one-hitters and allowing just one earned run in 25 innings of work.

Harvard, meanwhile, pounded out 38 hits and 28 runs in its four-game sweep of Yale. The Crimson struck out just six times all weekend and have now won six straight games.

Last week, Yale's Sarah Onorato saw her hitting streak come to an end against Wagner. She went hitless in the second game of the twinbill, seeing her streak snapped at 20 consecutive games, the second-longest in Yale history and the fourth-longest in Ivy League history.

Onorato continues to lead the league in several offensive catagories, including a .432 batting average. She also has a League-best 28 runs scored, 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 97 total bases.

Onorato still has a streak of consecutive games reaching base, currently at 25. Harvard's Kasey Lange has reached base safely in 23 straight games, as well.

Princeton's Alex Peyton, who hit three home runs in the series with Penn, is tied with Lange for the League lead in RBI with 31. Peyton now has nine homers on the season, is hitting .371 and has drawn an amazing 24 walks thus far.

Harvard's Shelby Olson was a spark plug for the Crimson in their four-game sweep of Yale. Going 7-for-13 at the plate, Olson was also a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases and is now perfect in 13 stolen base attempts this season.

Rumley leads the league in wins with 17, strikeouts with 136 and in ERA at 1.53 thus far this season. Penn's Alexis Borden earned her 10th win of the season over the weekend and joins Rumley and Cornell's Alyson Onyon as 10-game winners thus far this season.

This weekend's Ivy slate, which will mark the midway point of the League schedule, has Harvard visiting Brown, Penn visiting Cornell, Princeton entertaining Columbia and Yale hosting Dartmouth.
