PRINCETON, N.J. -- In a closely contested weekend of Ivy women’s soccer play, the second set of League games were all decided by one goal and only one team was able to earn a win on the road. Harvard and Columbia each recorded a second consecutive Ivy triumph to move to 2-0-0 on the year, while Dartmouth and Penn each registered their first League wins of the young season.
The Quakers came up with the first Ivy win of the weekend when they recorded a 2-1 win over Cornell on Friday. After a scoreless first half, Penn and Cornell traded goals to start the second half before Marin McDermott scored the game-winning goal at 74:39. It was McDermott’s fifth goal of the season. Megan Bartlett kept the Big Red in the game by making 10 saves in the match, seven of which came in a busy second half. Penn followed with a 3-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon for a 2-0-0 week. Megan York scored a pair of goals in the win over Saint Francis.
On Saturday, Dartmouth edged Princeton, 1-0, in Hanover, N.H. It was a defensive game in which just four shots were put on target and the game remained tied at 0-0 deep into the second half. Aly O'Dea picked a great time to score her first of the season for the Big Green, breaking the deadlock in the 88th minute.
Also on Saturday, Harvard came away with the only Ivy road win of the weekend when it downed Yale, 2-1, in overtime. Meredith Speck put the home side up 1-0 in the 17th minute with a strike from 20–yards out. Melanie Baskind then equalized for the visitors with just over a half hour left. Then, 2:16 into the first overtime, Peyton Johnson’s driven cross struck a Bulldog hand and the Crimson were awarded a penalty kick, which Johnson converted for the win.
In Saturday’s final Ivy contest, Columbia freshman Alexa Yow scored her first two career goals in the opening 19 minutes of play to lead the Lions to a 2-1 win over visiting Brown. Kirsten Belinsky cut the Brown deficit to one with a goal in the 72nd minute, but the Columbia defense held the Bears to just one shot the rest of the way en route to the win. Prior to Saturday’s game, Brown picked up a non-conference win on Wednesday over Ocean State rival Rhode Island, 1-0, on an Emily Wingrove game-winning goal.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Columbia freshman forward Alexa Yow (Farmington,
Conn.) earned her first career start against Brown on Saturday and
came through with an impact performance, registering two goals to
lead Columbia to a 2-1 win over the visiting Bears. Yow tallied
both goals in the opening half, the first of which came on a
left-footed blast from 20 yards out at the 9:18 mark. The
Connecticut native hit the crossbar with a shot in the 15th minute,
but kept pressing and scored her second goal of the match (and of
her career) in the 19th minute on a header. Yow concluded the match
with five shots, three of which were on goal.
Yow, who now leads the Lions with two goals on the year, is
Columbia’s first Ivy League Player of the Week since
Nora Dooley earned the honor on Oct. 18, 2010.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Penn freshman forward Megan York (Chicago, Ill.)
helped the Quakers to a 2-0-0 record last week, including a 2-1 win
over Ivy foe Cornell and a 3-0 non-conference victory over Saint
Francis (Pa.).
After pressuring the Big Red with four shots on goal, York made
her chances count against Saint Francis when she netted two goals,
including the game winner, in Penn’s second win of the
weekend. York, who ranks second on the Quakers with four goals this
season, is Penn’s first Ivy League Rookie of the Week since
Nov. 1, 2010, when Kerry Scalora was named the
League’s top rookie.

THIS WEEK
The The upcoming week includes three non-conference games and the
third set of League games for the Ancient Eight.
Penn visits Columbia on Friday night, with the Lions looking to
remain unbeaten in League play and the Quakers trying to draw level
with Columbia in the standings with a win. Columbia and Penn enter
the game as two of the League’s hottest teams, with each
squad having won four if its last five matches.
Harvard hits the road to play at Cornell. The Crimson will attempt
to stay unbeaten in League play and add to a three-game winning
streak, while Cornell tries for its first Ivy win of the year.
Princeton will also be looking for its first Ivy win of 2011 when
it plays at Brown. The Bears enter Saturday’s game looking to
improve upon its 1-1-0 Ivy record.
Finally, Dartmouth travels to Yale with both teams entering the
game with identical 1-1-0 Ivy records on the year.
