PRINCETON, N.J. -- A week after the Ivy League
women’s lacrosse season kicked off, six of the teams opened
their conference slates. When the dust settled, Brown, Cornell and
Dartmouth were all 1-0 in League play.
Brown (3-0, 1-0 Ivy) upended Columbia (1-2, 0-1 Ivy) in triple
overtime, 11-10. It marked the third-straight year the Bears and
Lions opened their Ivy seasons against each other, and the
third-straight year Brown came away with a win. This year’s
victory went down to the final seconds of the third extra session,
when senior Lindsay Minges found the back of the
net off an assist from fellow classmate Tara
Rooke. The win helped the Bears go 2-0 on the week, thanks
to a 10-4 win over Manhattan the next day, while the Lions fell to
0-2 on the week after an earlier 16-9 loss to Lafayette.
No. 12 Dartmouth continued to roll, improving to 3-0 overall, 1-0
in Ivy play, after defeating New Hampshire, 11-10, and Yale (1-2,
0-1 Ivy), 10-6. The Big Green waited until the last second –
actually, the fifth to last second – to defeat UNH, as
freshman Jaclyn Leto scored with five tics
remaining off an assist from junior Liz Calby.
Against Yale, Dartmouth jumped out to a 6-2 halftime lead and held
on for the four-goal victory. Senior Hana Bowers
continued her solid play, posting six points on four goals and two
assists in the win over the Bulldogs, who previously defeated
Quinnipiac, 19-12 on Feb. 27.
Cornell (2-0, 1-0 Ivy) and Harvard (0-2, 0-1 Ivy) staged a
shootout in Ithaca, N.Y., with the No. 15 Big Red coming out ahead,
17-12. Sophomore Lindsay Toppe finished with four
goals and five assists, freshman Emily Tripodi
tallied a goal and five assists and junior Amanda
D’Amico scored four goals in the win. For the
Crimson, senior Micaela Cyr and freshmen
Alexis Nicolia and Audrey Todd
combined for nine goals and four assists.
The Ancient Eight’s trend of taking on tough non-conference
opponents continued. Penn (0-2) fell to No. 3 UNC, 11-5, while
Princeton (2-1) dropped a close game to No. 11 Georgetown, 11-6,
before rebounding to defeat Southern Cal, 18-13. Junior
Sarah Lloyd set a pair of career-highs against the
Trojans, in assists (six) and draw controls (eight). Her assists
total tied the Princeton single-game record.
More League games and more touch non-conference matchups are on
the docket for this coming week. In Ivy play, Harvard will host
Penn, Columbia will take on Cornell and Princeton will face Brown.
The highlight of the non-conference slate takes place on Saturday,
when No. 2 Florida travels to Hanover, N.H. to face No. 12
Dartmouth at 12:00 p.m.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cornell sophomore Lindsay Toppe (Bedford, N.Y.)
had a career day in the Big Red’s 17-12 victory over Harvard.
After posting a then-career-high seven points last week, Toppe
finished with nine points against the Crimson, scoring four times
and assisting on five others. She finished one point shy of tying
the school’s single-game record for points in a game and had
to content herself with merely being the first to tally nine in a
game since Jaimee Reynolds in 2002.
Toppe tied her career-high in goals, set last week against
Canisius, and set a new personal-best in assists. She earns her
first career Ivy League weekly award.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown is 3-0 to start the season for the first time in more than
12 years, thanks in no small part to the play of goalie
Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.). The sophomore
improved to 3-0 herself after helping the Bears defeat Columbia,
11-10 in three overtimes, and Manhattan, 10-4. She gave up 11 goals
on the week for a 5.53 goals against average, while recording 12
saves. She finished with eight saves and an 8.34 GAA against
Columbia, and then allowed just one goal in 47:21 minutes of action
against Manhattan.
Roddy is Brown’s first Defensive Player of the Week since
Isabel Harvey earned the award on April 12,
2010.
