Cornell, Harvard Advance with Opening-Round Sweeps in ECAC Women's Hockey Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Harvard made easy work of
Dartmouth with back-to-back shutouts, while Cornell needed to come
from behind twice to get past Colgate in the opening quarterfinal
round of the 2013 ECAC Women's Ice Hockey Championship.
With the wins, the Crimson (23-5-3, 17-3-2 ECAC Hockey, 8-1-1
Ivy League) and the Big Red (25-5-1, 18-3-1 ECACH, 8-1-1 Ivy)
advance to the semifinals set for Friday, March 8 at Cornell's
Lynah Rink. The Big Red will face fifth-seeded St. Lawrence in the
first semifinal with second-seeded Harvard taking on third-seeded
Clarkson in the second semifinal. The championship game is slated
for Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m.
Cornell, the tournament's top seed, needed overtime to grab a 5-4
victory over eighth-seeded Colgate at Lynah Rink in the first game
of the best-of-three series. The The Big Red got a game-winning
goal 39 seconds into the overtime period from Ivy League Player of
the Year Brianne Jenner -- her third of the night
-- after tying the game in the waning seconds of the third period
to force overtime.
The next night, Cornell pulled off some last-second heroics in a
3-2 win over the Raiders as Lauriane Rougeau tied
the game with less than a minute left with a blast under the
crossbar right off a faceoff. Fifty-two seconds later, Jenner snuck
the game-winner past Colgate goaltender Ashlynne
Rando's short side with one second left on the clock for
the thrilling victory.
Third-seeded Harvard did not allow a goal in its two games with
sixth-seeded Dartmouth, opening with a 3-0 win on Friday night to
give head coach Katey Stone her 400th career
victory. The Crimson got goals from Miye D'Oench,
Kalley Armstrong and Kaitlin
Spurling and 21 saves from Ivy League Rookie of the Year
Emerance Maschmeyer. It was the first playoff
shutout for Harvard since the Crimson blanked Cornell in the 2009
tournament.
In Game 2, Lyndsey Fry led the way in the
Crimson's 4-0 win with two goals. Spurling and Mary
Parker netted a goal each to cap the scoring. Maschmeyer
posted back-to-back shutouts over the Big Green (16-10-5, 11-7-4
ECACH, 6-2-2 Ivy) for the first time in her career. The 17-save
clean sheet is the freshman's fifth of her career.
