Princeton Drops to Second Following Day Three of the 2012 NCAA Fencing Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The third day of competition
at the 2012 NCAA Fencing Championships took place on Saturday at
Ohio State's French Field House and it included men's rounds one
through four. Princeton entered the day tied for first, but ended
day three in second place with 135 points, 14 behind the leaders
from Ohio State. The Tigers are five wins ahead of Notre Dame, the
2011 NCAA Champions.
With 106 points, Harvard remains firmly in sixth heading into the
final day of fencing, while Penn (93) and Columbia (81) are seventh
and eighth, respectively. Rounding out the Ivy contingent, Yale
(38) is 13th, followed by 14th-place Brown (34) and Cornell (18),
who is tied for 15th. The Big Red have completed its scoring for
the 2012 Championship, as only men's fencing remains.
In Saturday's epee action, Columbia's Alen Hadzic
posted 11 wins, good for second on the individual leader board.
Princeton's Jonathan Yergler was one of five
fencers to turn in 10 epee wins and stands in fifth based on a +14
indicator margin.
In men's foil, four of the top-six performers hail from Ivy
schools, led by Princeton's Alexander Mills, who
won 12 bouts, which tied for the most foil wins on the day with
Notre Dame's Enzo Castellani. Yale's Shiv
Kachru, Penn's Vidur Kapur and Harvard's
Lucas Lin all had 10 wins and rank fourth, fifth
and sixth heading into the final day of fencing.
In a crowded sabre field that saw only Ohio State's Max
Stearns post more than 10 wins (he had 13), Columbia's
Will Spear turned in 10 wins to rank third. Yale's
Nathaniel Benzimra sits in fourth after winning
nine bouts, and Harvard's Valentin Staller ranks
fifth after posting eight wins.
The 2012 NCAA Championship concludes on Sunday with rounds five through seven of men's round-robin action, with Princeton hoping to make up ground in order to challenge for the NCAA Championship. The Tigers could put the pressure on Ohio State, as they still have all of their 12 bouts versus Buckeye fencers on Sunday.
Following the completion of round-robin play, the top four
finishers in each weapon will fence simultaneous semifinal 15-touch
bouts, with the winners fencing to determine the 2012 individual
NCAA Champion. The semifinal losers will tie for third. Absolute
ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one
through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a
fence-off.
Coverage of the medal round is slated to air on ESPN3, with the
bouts scheduled to run from 1:45 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.
