PRINCETON, N.J. -- Penn and Princeton each
moved to 3-0-0 in Ivy League play this past weekend, with Penn
continuing to do so based largely on its stingy defense and
Princeton's offense leading the charge for the Tigers. The
Seventeenth-ranked Quakers recorded their third consecutive 1-0 Ivy
League win, downing Dartmouth on the road. After falling behind by
a 2-1 score with just under 30 minutes to play, Princeton fought
back for a 3-2 road win at Columbia, marking the third time in as
many Ivy games the Tigers have put three goals on the board.
Princeton has now won seven games in a row (and scored three goals
in all seven of those wins), while the Quakers have won five
straight.
Elsewhere, Harvard and fifteenth-ranked Brown played to a 0-0
stalemate in a physical battle in Providence, R.I. The Crimson, who
was outshot 25-6 in the match, stayed in the game in large part due
to the goalkeeping of junior Austin Harms, who
finished with six saves. With the tie, Harvard moves into sole
possession of third place in the Ivy League standings with five
points, while Brown is fourth with four points. In Saturday's
other Ivy game, Yale earned its first League win of the season with
a 1-0 victory at Cornell, meaning the road teams went 3-0-1 last
week. Senior midfielder Andy Shorten was the hero
for the Bulldogs, scoring what turned out to be the game winner at
36:43.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
It is not often that a defender garners attention for his work on
the offensive side of the field, but junior tri-captain
Thomas Brandt (Palmyra, Pa.) made his mark on No.
17 Penn's offense with a goal in the fourth minute to provide
the only scoring in Penn's 1-0 win at Dartmouth on Saturday.
Brandt's third goal of the season came off a restart, as he
pounced on a rebound following the free kick. The goal was his
second game winner of 2010.
After putting Penn up 1-0, Brandt then settled down into his
normal role as a shutdown center back for the Quakers. He directed
a defense that limited the Big Green to just two shots on goal and
rebuffed the Big Green on nine corner kicks, including three in the
final five minutes of play as Dartmouth pushed for the
equalizer.
Earlier in the week, Brandt teamed with his defensive partners to
blank American, 1-0. The two shutouts Brandt played a part in last
week ran Penn's stretch to four clean sheets in a row and the
Quaker defense is in the midst of a streak of not allowing a goal
that spans 395:92 (parts of five matches). He is Penn's first
Ivy League Player of the Week since freshman Stephen
Baker earned the honor on Sept. 6.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman defender/midfielder Patrick O'Neil
(Malvern, Pa.) scored his first collegiate goal in
Princeton's 3-0 shutout of Lafayette on Tuesday and helped
the Tigers to their fifth shutout of the season. With the Tigers
leading 1-0 in the 53rd minute, O'Neil dribbled through his
defenders and took a shot from the top of the box for an unassisted
insurance tally, extending the Tigers' lead to 2-0. He then
got the starting nod against Columbia and helped the Tigers battle
back from a 2-1 deficit for a 3-2 Ivy League road win, playing 68
minutes and getting off one shot in what turned out to be
Princeton's seventh consecutive win.
O'Neil is the first Tiger to earn Ivy League Rookie of the
week honors this season. In fact, he is Princeton's first
honoree since one year ago when Lester Nare earned
Rookie of the Week accolades on October 19, 2009.
