PRINCETON, N.J. -- Late game heroics and
overtime drama proved to be the norm on the second weekend of Ivy
League play as all three Ivy games were decided by one goal, with
two of the three games needing overtime to determine a winner.
Tenth-ranked Cornell played host to 13th-ranked Penn on Saturday
with a 2-0 League record at stake. The Big Red built a 7-2 lead at
the half, but the Quakers outscored Cornell 10-5 in the second half
to force overtime. Cornell won the overtime faceoff and Roy
Lang converted a David Lau feed for the
win.
Playing its first Ivy game of the season, Dartmouth used a last
second Nikki Dysenchuk goal to earn a 9-8 win over
visiting Harvard. Trailing by two with 3:47 to play, Harvard got
goals from Ryan Stevens and Jeff
Cohen to tie the game, 8-8, with 1:16 to play. The Big
Green then had the ball out of bounds with 4.7 seconds to play.
Dysenchuk received the inbounds and drove from behind the net to
score the winner.
In a battle of teams looking to avoid a 0-2 mark in League play,
Yale and Princeton also needed overtime to decide a winner. Yale
came back from a 6-2 deficit to force overtime where freshman
Brandon Mangan fired from 25 feet from the cage
for the game winner.
Also on Saturday, Brown had the Ivy League bye and took on
Vermont. The Bears overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-1 and the teams
eventually found themselves tied at 10-10 in the fourth quarter.
David Hawley then netted his second in a row to
give the Bears the lead for good and Parker Brown
added an insurance tally to provide the final 12-10 score.
In mid-week action, Dartmouth closed out a spring break trip to
North Carolina by facing the sixth-ranked Tar Heels. The Big Green
hung tough with UNC and the teams were tied 6-6 late in the third
quarter before UNC pulled away for the win. Also on Tuesday,
Cornell recorded an emphatic 17-9 win at 12th-ranked Stony Brook,
led by a five goal performance from Lau. The Big Red jumped out to
leads of 3-0 and 10-2 to cruise to the win.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior goalkeeper Fergus Campbell (New Canaan,
Conn.) helped Dartmouth post a 1-1 record last week, including a
win over Harvard in its Ivy League opener. Against sixth-ranked
North Carolina, Campbell made nine saves. Then against the Crimson,
Campbell stymied the high flying Harvard offense, which had entered
Saturday’s contest averaging better than 12.5 goals per game,
to its lowest goal total of the season in Dartmouth’s 9-8
overtime win. Ferguson made 17 saves to tie his season high mark,
grabbed 10 ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Campbell finished the week with 26 saves and a .565 save
percentage. It is the second time he has been named Ivy League
Player of the Week, having also earned the honor on April 5,
2010.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman attackman Brandon Mangan (Wantagh, N.Y.)
of Yale netted two goals, including the overtime game-winning
tally, to lead Yale to a victory at Princeton on Saturday. In
overtime, Mangan unleashed a shot from 25-yards out that found the
back of the net and gave the Bulldogs an 8-7 come-from-behind win
over the Tigers. It was Yale’s first win over Princeton since
2005, snapping Princeton’s six game winning streak in the
series.
Mangan made his shots count, scoring on his only two shots of the
game. His first goal of the game cut Princeton’s lead to 6-4
late in the third quarter. He is the first Bulldog to earn Ivy
League Rookie of the Week honors since Peter
Johnson earned the honor on April 12, 2010.

THIS WEEK
Another week of big games is on tap for the Ivy League men’s
lacrosse teams, with action slated to begin with a pair of
non-conference games on Tuesday. Brown travels south to face
third-ranked Duke at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Harvard welcomes
14th-ranked Massachusetts to Harvard Stadium for a primetime
matchup slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night.
On Friday, April 1 the third round of League play begins when
15th-ranked Yale plays at 13th-ranked Penn. Both teams carry 1-1
Ivy records into what could prove to be a crucial matchup. The
Bulldogs will be trying hand Penn its first home loss of the
season.
On Saturday, April 2 Brown plays at Princeton, with each team
looking for its first Ivy win of the year. Also on Saturday, the
remaining two Ivy unbeatens clash at 3:00 p.m. in Ithaca,
N.Y. Seventh-ranked Cornell will be trying to jump out to a
3-0 Ivy League record with a win, while a Dartmouth upset would
stake the Big Red to a 2-0 League mark.
Harvard has the League bye and closes out its stretch of
back-to-back non-conference games by playing at Albany on Saturday
afternoon.
