PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ivy League men’s golf season began on Sept. 10 when Brown teed it up at the Navy invitational and now the fall season enters a busy stretch of action for the Ivies. Brown, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale each played an event on the opening weekend. Columbia and Dartmouth will begin their seasons on Sept. 16 and Cornell enters the fray on Sept. 18.
First weekend highlights included Brown firing a school record 283 on the final day of competition at the Navy Fall Classic to finish fifth at the event, which was played at the par 71, 6,600-yard Naval Academy Golf Course. Freshman Justin Miller led the Bears on the final day of play by shooting a two-under par 69.
Penn turned in a runner-up performance at the Maryland Intercollegiate, which was played in Cambridge, Md., at the par-71, 6,801-yard River Marsh Golf Club. Quaker Max Marsico shot three sub-70 rounds to tie with three others -- Georgetown's Brian Dorfman, as well as Taylor Dickson and Damon Postal from Winthrop -- for medalist honors with a three-round score of 206. No playoff took place and all four were declared quad-champions.
Elsewhere, Harvard, Yale and Princeton contested their annual H-Y-P match play event at the Sebonack Golf Course in Southhampton, N.Y. The Bulldogs earned the win with 7.5 points, edging Harvard (6.5) and Princeton (4.0). Sophomore Sam Bernstein, junior Bradley Kushner and freshman Thomas Greenhalgh each turned in two wins to lead Yale to the victory.
In the coming days, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard and Princeton will all take part in the McLaughlin Invitational in Farmingdale, N.Y. at Bethpage Red on Sept. 16-17. Cornell will open its season at the St. Bonaventure Invitational in Olean, N.Y. at the Bartlett Country Club on Sept. 18-19. Brown, Dartmouth and Yale will vie for the Adams Cup at Newport National in Middletown, R.I. on Sept. 19-20.
