Men’s Golf Fall Update 2

PRINCETON, N.J. – It was an eventful past week for the Ivy League men’s golf teams, with seven of the eight squads playing in three different tournaments. The week was highlighted by Princeton’s second place showing at the McLaughlin Cup in Farmingdale, N.Y. Princeton carded scores of 287-272-281--840 to finish just two strokes behind first place West Florida.

Chase Lovett-Woodsum (69-65-74--208) and Bernie D’Amato (70-68-70--208) led the Tigers by finishing tied for third. Lovett-Woodsum’s second round 65 was the lowest round of the tournament, which was played on Sept. 17 and 18.

Also at the St. John’s hosted McLaughlin Cup, played on Bethpage State Park’s Red Course, Harvard finished tied for seventh (285-284-287--856) and Dartmouth 12th (291-290-287--868) in the 15-team field. Mark Pollak (70-71- 7--213) and Theodore Lederhausen (69-72-72--213) tied for 23rd to lead the Crimson, while Peter Williamson (69-71-69--209) finished seventh to lead the Big Green.

The Cornell Big Red competed at St. Bonaventure’s 2010 Leo J. Keenan Invitational on Sept. 18 and 19 and finished tied for fourth (306-294--600). Matt Jaye shot an opening round 71 and fired a second round 69 to finish as the runner up. Jaye’s 140 was just one shot behind medalist Brian McKenna of St. Bonaventure.

The Penn men’s golf team finished seventh out of 15 teams at the Maryland Intercollegiate, a 54-hole event that took place at the River Marsh Golf Club on Sept. 18 and 19. The Quakers totaled an 871 (282-298-291) at the event. Like Jaye, Penn’s Max Marsico also turned in a runner-up showing by shooting a 208 (68-70-70) to finish one stroke behind Penn State’s Michael Miller.

Both Yale and Brown took part in the ninth annual Adams Cup at the Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, R.I. on Sept. 20 and 21. Yale finished ninth (313-298-297--908) in the 17-team field, while Brown finished 17th (330-329-309--968). Yale’s Tom McCarthy (78-72-73--223) tied for 14th to lead the Bulldogs, while Peter Callas and J.D. Ardell had Brown’s best finishes, tying for 58th.

Next up for the Ivies, Cornell and Columbia will take part in The Cornell Invitational at the Robert Trent Jones Course on Sept. 25 and 26, while Penn plays host to the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational on Sept. 27. Dartmouth and Harvard will join Yale at the MacDonald Cup, which will be played on the Golf Course at Yale on Oct. 4 and 5.

The Golf Course at Yale was rated the top Campus Course according to the latest Golfweek rankings (released on Sept. 9, 2010) … Cornell’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course was rated 27th on that same list … The next Ivy League men’s golf update will be posted after the conclusion of the MacDonald Cup.
