PRINCETON, N.J. -- Anticipation and interest in Ivy League men's basketball is high as evidenced by the numerous preseason predictions and mentions about the League leading into the 2011-12 season.
The reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, Harvard senior forward Keith Wright, leads the way for the Ancient Eight as a unanimous preseason All-Ivy choice and one of 50 preseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award, the nation's most coveted college basketball honor, as announced by The Los Angeles Athletic Club on ESPN.com. Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball media members, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.
Joining Wright named on four different All-Ivy first teams are Columbia senior guard Noruwa Agho, Yale senior forward Greg Mangano and Penn senior guard Zack Rosen.
Agho returns for his final season in a Columbia uniform after averaging a League-best 16.8 points per game in 2010-11. His 470 points last season were the most by a Lion in 10 years.
Mangano is back off a impressive junior campaign and summer. Last season, he was the first player in Yale history to average a double-double for the season since Chris Dudley (17.6 ppg, 13.3 rpg) in 1986-87 and the first Ivy player since Harvard's Kyle Snowden (15.1 ppg, 11.1 rpg in all games, 14.1 ppg, 10.8 rpg in Ivy games) in 1995-96. This summer, he was just the third Yale player and sixth Ivy League player to earn a spot on a USA Basketball roster. Mangano represented the USA in the 2011 World University Games this summer where he averaged 3.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in six tournament games. Team USA finished fifth in the tournament.
Rosen, a two-time, first-team All-Ivy pick, finished the 2010-11 season averaging a team-leading 14.3 points per game, and in Ivy play he finished 12th among Ancient Eight players in scoring (13.1 ppg) and was second in assists per game (6.2) while averaging a League-high 37.4 minutes per contest.
