PRINCETON, N.J. -- Two #IvyFootball standouts are among the 22 players on the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award watch list, it was announced.
Penn senior wide receiver Justin Watson and Princeton senior quarterback John Lovett, the two finalists for the 2016 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year award, were each placed on the list for the prestigious honor, which goes to the FCS Offensive Player of the Year. STATS will hold its national awards banquet the night of Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the FCS national championship game.
It marks the sixth-straight year that an Ivy was named to the initial watch list, and the first time during that stretch that two Ivies were included.
A finalist for the Walter Payton Award in 2016, Watson finished 23rd nationally in the voting and is one of eighteen returning finalists from those in contention last season. Named a preseason STATS FCS first-team All-American earlier this week, Watson is one of five wide receivers on the watch list.
Lovett, who earned first-team All-America honors last fall after winning the Bushnell Cup as the 2016 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and was also named preseason first-team All-America earlier this week, is the first Tiger to be placed on the Walter Payton Award watchlist since Quinn Epperly in 2014.
