ITHACA, N.Y. – After three weeks of waiting since the program captured its first league title since 1977, the baseball team finally found out Monday where it will be playing in the NCAA Regionals – Chapel Hill, N.C.
Cornell (31-15-1) will be the No. 4 seed in the four-team regional, which features a double-elimination format. Only one of the four teams will advance to one of the NCAA's eight Super Regionals. This weekend, regional host North Carolina (44-14) is the top seed and will take on the Big Red in Friday's second game, scheduled to start at 6 p.m. The regional will kick off with a 1 p.m. Friday game between No. 2 seed East Carolina (35-22-1) and No. 3 seed St. John's (37-21).

The two Friday losers will then play in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Saturday, while the winners will play for a spot in the finals at 6 p.m. The Sunday schedule will feature another elimination game between the other two remaining teams, with the winner moving on to the finals at 6 p.m.. If needed, the teams will meet again on Monday to decide who advances.
The Big Red has appeared in the NCAA tournament once before, winning two games before being eliminated by losing the next two in Middletown, Conn. in 1977. Oddly enough, Cornell played St. John's twice in that regional with a win and a loss against the Red Storm. This year's St. John's squad won the BIG EAST Tournament with a 7-3 victory over South Florida on Sunday.

East Carolina received an at-large bid to NCAAs after bowing out to eventual champion UAB in the Conference-USA Tournament. The regional opener for the Big Red will be the first clash with North Carolina, which is the No. 6 seed nationally, since 1969. The Tar Heels had a 13-game winning streak to close out the regular season before going 2-1 in ACC Tournament.
